Ashihara Karate was developed mainly from Kyokushin , Aikido and Jujitsu by Hideyuki Ashihara. He placed more emphasis on positioning and taking down (Sabaki), rather than fighting an opponent head on. The reasoning behind this, is by shifting out of the line of the attack, you can off-balance them more easily and so have a greater chance of felling them.

Ashihara Karate belongs to NIKO (New International Karate Organisation). This was founded by Kancho in 1980.

These are some quotes from Kancho Hideyuki Ashihara:

"I am not aiming for a style that results in a mass of failures, while producing one superman, more a style where the enthusiast can continue training for a lifetime, improving gradually without dropping out on the way. . ."

"If you think you cannot do it, then you cannot. If you think you can, seek deeply, and you will always find a way"

Kancho died in 1995 and now his son Hidenori Ashihara has taken up this position.
